This turqouise is called Campitos. Mined and traded in Mexico by native peoples since ancient times. The Toltecs and Aztecs left much evidence of the importance of turquoise in their cultures. Campitos is unique in that it grows in clay as free-form nuggets, as opposed to its North American family which grows in veins. The name comes from the Spanish word “campo” which means countryside. It’s color is close to Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and a favorite among silversmiths.
